On Tuesday at the NFL's spring meetings, the league voted that it will allow its players to participate in the 2028 Olympics as a part of Team USA's flag football team.
Everyone got excited, and the big discussions have already started about who should be on this team. The thing is, they're signing up players who are good in 2025 to be a part of a team that won't play until 2028. That's a long way away. Some of the players people are recommending will be in their 30s by then.
Even Minnesota Vikings' All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson wasn't sure that he would be able to participate when he was asked on Tuesday.
The other thing is that this isn't going to be like football in the NFL. There won't be 53 players on the team. There's going to be just 12, and only five of them will be on the field at a time. There's probably not going to be a big need for most of the positions you expect football to bring along.
If you can only have five offensive players on the field, you're probably looking at a quarterback, two receivers, a running back, and maybe a tight end who can snap the ball.
With that in mind, there's really only one Lions player currently on the team who makes the most sense for Team USA, and that's Jahmyr Gibbs. He'll be 27 when the 2028 Summer Olympics roll around.
He should be a multiple-time All-Pro by then, and the Dream Team is going to need players who can bring speed and offensive prowess to the team. It doesn't hurt that he's shown that he can play two ways as well. Remember that interception he got in the Pro Bowl?
This is not to say that any other player on the team will have taken a step back or anything like that. It is saying that there are a lot of players to pick from, and you have to believe that the group making the selection is going to want to pick younger players and probably doesn't want to just pick a bunch of guys from the same team. Therefore, Gibbs makes the most sense.
The NFL never really gave the Lions the time of the day on rule proposals
The Detroit Lions made multiple proposals for rule changes ahead of the league meetings in April. They proposed that the league do away with automatic first downs as a result of defensive holding. That one got voted down fast. They also proposed that the NFL change the year-round 90-man roster to 95 players after the […]
