The Vikings firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah could have a negative effect on Brad Holmes and the Lions
The Lions lost a trusted trade partner.
Over the weekend, the Minnesota Vikings fired their general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. That seems like a good sign for the Detroit Lions, and in a lot of ways, it can be. The Vikings now have to find their new GM relatively late in the process, and there will be a period during which the new person will need to get on track.
It’s not a significant negative, but the Vikings’ move has a negative impact on Brad Holmes and the Lions, too.
Adofo-Mensah proved to be a good trade partner multiple times for Holmes and the Lions
What if I told you that Adofo-Mensah helped build this Lions team as we know it today with just a couple of trades? Well, that’s what happened. Two Lions trades with the Vikings brought the Lions Sam LaPorta, Jameson Williams, Terrion Arnold, and Sione Vaki. That’s pretty impactful.
The first trade helped the Lions move up to the 12th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to select Williams. They also got a pick they used to select Josh Paschal.
The other trade was moving T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings. That trade allowed the Lions to acquire LaPorta the next year, but it also gave them picks they used to acquire Arnold and Vaki. They also got Hendon Hoooker, Antoine Green, and Brodric Martin out of that, so there’s some downside.
The Lions aren’t making many deals with other teams in the division. In fact, they’ve done none with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. This isn’t the end of the world, but it’s one fewer trade partner in the league.
