Cornerback is all the rage with the Detroit Lions right now. Maybe that's because it certainly looks like they're about to rebuild the position for the most part. Jerry Jacobs was just let go and the Lions are reportedly looking for a high end corner and have expressed interest in trading for Chiefs star L'Jarius Sneed.

This had me thinking about what the perfect offseason would look like for the Lions at corner and how attainable that really is. I put together a group of guys that the Lions could realistically get and this is what I think they could come out of the offseason with.

  • L'Jarius Sneed
  • Cameron Sutton
  • Brian Branch
  • Darious Williams
  • Kris Abrams-Draine
  • Emmanuel Moseley
  • Steven Gilmore
  • Kindle Vildor
  • Chase Lucas

First off, I have the Lions pulling off the Sneed trade. He's their best option at a high end corner this year and while they have to trade for him, he's a solid addition and an instant and true number one corner. Something this team hasn't had since Darius Slay was in town.

Darious Williams just makes way too much sense to ignore. He was just with new Lions defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend in Jacksonville and was playing the best ball of his career with him. Williams was also with the Rams when Ray Agnew was there as the teams director of pro scouting. The Lions know what they can get here and he'd be a great cornerback three.

Missouri's Kris Abrams-Draine is on the wish list in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Lions are looking for outside corners that can tackle and Abrams-Draine was one of the very best tacklers in all of college football in 2023. The Lions could grab him on day two and be set with a guy that could be a starter in the near future.

Steven Gilmore is destined for bigger things. How big is not known yet becasue the sample size is so small. The Lions clearly liked him enough to stash him on their 53-man roster all year long instead of risking losing him on the practice squad. The Lions had multiple occasions where they needed to clear room to bring guys back and they still didn't move off Gilmore despite the fact that he only played one game last year. The Lions clearly want to see where things go with him.

Vildor and Lucas sticking around is all about camp battles. These guys could battle it out with Gilmore for that final roster spot and whoever doesn't make it has practice squad written all over them.

This is all extremely doable for the Lions. We'll see what they come out with for real, but if it's this, we're talking about a drastic turnaround at the position. One that could help propel the Lions to the Super Bowl.
