Two guys may have lost their starting jobs in Lions big win over Cowboys, 6 other takeaways
The Lions got a the big win right when they needed it the most.
The Detroit Lions needed to have it, and they got it. The streak of not losing two games in a row continues. The Lions walked out with a 44-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys and turned their playoff chances from possibly gone to being right back in the mix.
Goff Report
It was a great game from Jared Goff. He threw for 309 yards and tied himself with Matt Ryan for the second most 300-yard games for a quarterback in their first 10 years.
Only Patrick Mahomes has more with 50. He threw just one touchdown, but could have had a second if he had just hit Isaac TeSlaa in the right spot. Either way, it was a good game from Goff when the Lions needed it.
Oh, there’s the defensive line
The Lions brought it in the first half. They walked out with eight pressures and two sacks. Lions fans have been wondering where these guys were for a minute.
During the week, Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard said there would be some tweaks to make sure the team could get pressure. Those tweaks showed up in this one. In the second half, they got 14 more pressures and added two more sacks.
Making the Cowboys one-dimensional
Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke earlier in the week about the Lions’ primary objective on defense: stopping the run to make Dallas one-dimensional. That worked like a charm in the first half, holding Dallas to just 39 yards on the ground.
In the second half, they held the Cowboys to 51 yards on the ground. Because of that, Prescott had a lot of struggles in this game, getting sacked four times and throwing two picks.
Capitalizing on turnovers
The Lions haven’t been producing turnovers at the clip they were earlier in the season. They grabbed three in this game, but more importantly, they did what they needed to do with them afterwards. They turned them into 14 points.
One of the Lions’ biggest weaknesses early on was that they would get takeaways but wouldn’t turn them into touchdowns. In some cases, they wouldn’t even get a field goal. You have to hope this turns into a trend for the Lions. The final turnover, an interception by D.J. Reed, ended the game.
Jack Campbell may have made the Pro Bowl off the back of this game
What a game from Jack Campbell. He had the sack on Prescott that looked like it could have been a safety, and then a couple of drives later, he forced a fumble that turned into a touchdown.
To top it off, he led the team with 12 tackles. When the first Pro Bowl voting numbers came out, Campbell was leading linebackers in votes. That number might go up after this one.
Miles Frazier makes his debut
The Lions initially started Trystan Colon in this game. He was letting up some pressure and got Goff hit twice. The Lions brought in Miles Frazier, and he seemed like a fairly good upgrade as a pass blocker. The run blocking could use some help, but he made a strong case to continue to be the starter until Christian Mahogany returns. We’ll see what they do against the Rams next week.
Tom Kennedy is the return man now
What a game for Tom Kennedy at the kick returner spot. Kennedy had returns of 42 yards, 40 yards, and 38 yards. Saylors has been the guy for a while now, and he’s still going to be out there, but Kennedy will no doubt get some shots to run it back as the kick returner in Los Angeles next weekend.
