Devin McCourty is a true New England Patriots legend.
So it's not secret that many would like to see him back in Foxborough, but this time as a coach.
However, McCourty put an end to any potential rumors when speaking at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.
“I will not be on any coaching staff or anything like that,” McCourty said. “I’ll stick to what I’m doing now.”
So Sunday Night Football doesn't have to worry about losing one of their popular commentators.
He wanted to dispel all of that while in attendance at Jerod Mayo's introductory press conference as the 15th head coach in Patriots history.
Since Mayo is a former player, it's easy to see why that connection would be made.
But he has no interest.
He even explained how he was sort of surprised when Mayo returned to the staff in 2019.
“Well it’s funny because when he came back in 2019, I called him and was like, ‘what the hell are you doing?’ We always said to each other that we wouldn’t coach," McCourty recalled. "So why are you coming back and coaching?"
Ultimately though, it all made sense.
"I think his passion and love for football finally came through and is the reason he left the business world,” McCourty added. "But I think now to see the moment full circle, I knew when he got into coaching that he wasn’t going to be a guy that just got into coaching to coach. I knew it was going to be how can I learn how to be the best at this? How can I be a head coach someday? So to see that come true and he didn’t have to leave and go somewhere else. He gets to do it in a place that he loves.”
So while McCourty might not be returning, he will forever have Mayo's back.
“But any way that I can show him support, I’m gonna go out of my way and do it.”
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has an endearing nickname for Robert Kraft
A whole lot of smiles.
