Examining teams that still have question marks at QB
As OTAs are opening up across the league and mandatory minicamps are just weeks away, some teams still have unresolved quarterback situations. QB is obviously the most important position on an NFL roster, and not having a quality one means your season is finished before it even gets started.
Let’s examine the teams that are still facing uncertainty with their signal callers.
Cleveland Browns
Current QBs on the roster: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel
Favorite to win the starting job: This is as wide open of a competition as it gets. The only thing that seems certain is the team will be moving on from Watson, who is puzzlingly still on the roster. Our Browns beat writer Brandon Little recently identified Pickett as a trade candidate, but Pickett did look good in limited action with the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Flacco could have an edge as a veteran, but committing to a 40 year old as your starter is less than ideal. The best case scenario would be either of the two rookies, Sanders or Gabriel, to take the job by the horns.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Current QBs on the roster: Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, Will Howard
Favorite to win the starting job: As things stand now you have to give the edge to Rudolph, who has been with the Steelers since 2018 (minus the 2024 season). He has a career 9-8-1 record as a starter, throwing for 4,616 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. The rookie Howard, fresh off of leading the Ohio State Buckeyes to a national championship victory, could have a shot at the starting job if he impresses. However, the elephant in the room is free agent Aaron Rodgers, who has been linked to Pittsburgh for the majority of the offseason. It still appears likely that he’ll end up with the Steelers, and if he does you can pretty much lock him in as the starter.
New Orleans Saints
Current QBs on the roster: Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, Jake Haener, Hunter Dekkers
Favorite to win the starting job: This should be a two-horse race between Rattler and Shough, who have been splitting first- and second-team reps during OTAs. Rattler started six games for the Saints as a rookie in 2024, taking a loss in each one of them. He finished the season with 3,198 passing yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. New Orleans drafted Shough in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He threw for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions for Louisville in 2024. Following the sudden retirement of Derek Carr, there was speculation about Rodgers possibly joining the Saints instead of the Steelers, but Rodgers shut that down.
New York Giants
Current QBs on the roster: Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, Tommy DeVito
Favorite to win the starting job: Wilson has actually been named the starter by coach Brian Daboll, but Winston and Dart will be heavily breathing down his neck. With Winston as a proven backup and Dart being a first-round draft pick, Wilson’s leash could be a short one. Wilson still has his moments when he looks like a solid player, but he crumbled down the stretch of the 2024 season, losing five of his last seven games with Pittsburgh. Winston is basically in the same boat as Wilson performance-wise, so it feels inevitable that the Giants will turn to Dart at some point in 2025.
NFL observes Memorial Day 2025

Today is Memorial Day, and the NFL took to social media to observe former players, coaches and team personnel whose lives were lost while serving in the military. Nearly every franchise’s social media team also created posts to observe those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Our Detroit Lions beat writer Mike Payton wrote a great piece regarding the often forgotten 1942 Lions team who had multiple players leave to go to war.
