The New York Giants' struggles continue on both sides of the gridiron. ON offense, they do not have the quarterback of the future on the roster. The offensive line is dealing with multiple key injuries.

As for the defense, they had issues in the trenches in Week 12, but the secondary continues to be the biggest problem on the unit. New York has poured draft capital into cornerback and safety. Those picks have not worked out on a wide scale view.

Defensive issues

The Giants have not forced an interception since Week 1. That's an NFL record due to the timeliness of their lack of production.

The Giants tied the modern NFL record for most consecutive games in a single season without a defensive interception, according to Ryan Dunleavy.

The more difficult aspect of this stat? What could have been for New York if they made a different choice this offseason.

New York chose to move on from safety Xavier McKinney during this past offseason. The safety has been one of the best in football in 2024, and he leads the league with seven interceptions. Seven!

Of course, a contract extension is a two-way street. McKinney chose a contract from the Green Bay Packers, but the Giants' choice to accept their other options at safety when diagnosing how hard they'd go after McKinney could be a long-term downfall

Tyler Nubin has been a good player as a rookie, but outside of him, the safety room has been extremely inconsistent. For Nubin, he doesn't provide the same skillset that McKinney presents, either.

At cornerback, they've invested heavily at the position during recent draft classes. New York spent a third-round pick on Cordale Flott and Dru Phillips, and Deonte Banks was their first drounder in 2023.

All in all, decisions in the secondary have set back the Giants defense in an important manner in recent years, and McKinney's situation headlines those tough choices.
