Pass catchers don't grow on trees for the NFL. For the New York Giants, they may be able to land one with some unique upside entering the 2024 season, though.
Darren Waller just retired. That leaves Daniel Bellinger and Theo Johnson as the top two tight ends on the depth chart. Bellinger has been a backup for much of his first two years in the league and has dealt with some injuries. Johnson is unproven as a rookie.
Giants should sign UFL star Hakeem Butler
Butler was named 2024 UFL Offensive Player of the Year. He was one of the best players in the league throughout their spring season. Now, it may land him a spot on an NFL roster entering the fall.
Butler deserves another shot in the league, and the Giants make a ton of sense for him. He's a towering pass catcher at 6'4, and New York just lost Darren Waller to retirement. The match would make a ton of sense.
Former NFL head coach Wade Phillips now coaches in the UFL. After the championship game, he had a gleaming review for Butler on live TV. He is advocating for him to get another chance in the NFL.
I’m going to tell everybody in the NFL that I talk to that you need to be playing,”
Butler is a former fourth-round pick in 2019. He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals but never played for them. He has played in just two NFL games, both with the Philadelphia Eagles. Butler does not have a reception in the league yet.
That being said, he may have unlocked more of his potential during his UFL days as of late. It's worth a dart throw for New York, as well as some other teams around the NFL.
