The Packers have been relatively active to claim players — last year, for example, they got tight end Ben Sims from the Minnesota Vikings.
So, let's discuss five names to watch for Green Bay.
CB Caleb Farley (Tennessee Titans)
A first-round pick in 2021, Farley is an extremely talented player. However, injuries have prevented him from being a regular contributor in the NFL. If the Packers want a high-end target, Farley can be a solid reclamation project.
QB Desmond Ridder (Arizona Cardinals)
The Packers traded for Malik Willis, who's from the same draft class, so it looks like they wouldn't want Ridder. But for free, maybe they consider it. Ridder is not a high-ceiling quarterback, but he has certainly been a better passer than Willis in the NFL.
K Charlie Smyth (New Orleans Saints)
Born in Northern Ireland, Smyth was a Gaelic Football goalkeeper, but he made a transition to American football in January as part of the International Pathway Program. He had a strong training camp for the Saints and converted a 37-yard field goal in the preseason. New Orleans decided to keep second-year kicker Blake Grupe, so Smyth was waived. The Saints are hoping that the British clears waivers, so they can bring him back to the practice squad with an IPP roster exemption, but the Packers would possibly like the idea of having a new long-term kicker after cutting Anders Carlson.
G Josh Ball (Dallas Cowboys)
The Packers don't have much interior depth, and the former fourth-round pick has been a decent backup for the Cowboys. With several additions this year, though, Dallas decided to part ways with him even after a good preseason.
RB Frank Gore Jr. (Buffalo Bills)
The son of the legendary Frank Gore has a strong preseason for the Bills. He carried the ball 18 times for 101 yards (4.9 yards per attempt) and a 57-yard touchdown, and also had a reception. The Packers might want a healthy running back with AJ Dillon out for the season and MarShawn Lloyd still battling a hamstring injury, so this move could make sense.
Other targets
Off-ball linebacker Curtis Bolton is a vested veteran, so he doesn't go through waivers after being cut by the Miami Dolphins. Ideally, the Packers could add him to the practice squad, with a crowded linebacker room, but he's a good player.
Another option is quarterback Bailey Zappe, even though an unlikely one. He has starting experience and would be an interesting option to the practice squad. However, the Packers are expected to keep Sean Clifford because he knows the system.
