What Aaron Rodgers' meeting with the Jets means for his future with Packers
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers reportedly spoke with the New York Jets this week
Tuesday morning brought us a major development in the Green Bay Packers/Aaron Rodgers saga.
According to SNY's Connor Hughes, Rodgers spoke with the New York Jets on Monday.
The assumption is that Green Bay gave Rodgers permission to speak with the Jets, otherwise it would be considered tampering.
Despite the conversation with the Jets, Rodgers, according to Hughes, hasn't revealed his decision about playing in 2023 to the Packers yet.
The conversation with the Jets comes on the heels of Rich Eisen suggesting that Green Bay doesn't want Rodgers to return in 2023.
So what does this all mean?
Well, despite what Eisen said this week, the Packers are committed to doing what Rodgers wants, according to Hughes.
From SNY: Per Hughes, the Packers haven't wavered in their stance with Rodgers, and are "going to do what he wants," whether that's a return to Green Bay, a trade, or retirement. Hughes adds that as of Monday, Rodgers had not let the Packers know what he wants to do, but the feeling is that he will soon. The Jets are focused on Rodgers — who has always been their top QB target — after Derek Carr agreed to sign a deal with the New Orleans Saints.
It appears that Rodgers is testing the waters with the Jets before he makes his final decision, which is certainly understandable. And I don't think it's any coincidence that this conversation is happening the day after Derek Carr signed with the Saints.
Rodgers is big on the process and how teams treat him. It probably means a lot to him that the Jets didn't try to outbid New Orleans for Carr. If they would've made a strong run at Carr and then turned to Rodgers after they came up short, it likely would've altered how the future Hall of Fame quarterback viewed a potential opportunity with the Jets.
I think this meeting with the Jets ultimately tells us that Rodgers is still figuring out what he wants to do. He's doing his due diligence on the Jets to see what the best situation for him would be.
I would expect a decision to come very soon, but I don't think that decision has been made just yet.
