The Chicago Bears have requested an interview for their head coach opening with a Green Bay Packers coordinator. Based on that sentence, you could expect that the rival would be interested in Jeff Hafley, who did an impressive job in his first year as an NFL defensive coordinator.
But that's not the case. The Bears will interview Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, according to ESPN's insider Adam Schefter.
This is extremely curious because in 2022, the Packers lost Nathaniel Hackett, who took over as the Denver Broncos head coach. At that time, the main internal options to replace Hackett were Luke Getsy and Adam Stenavich. However, Getsy preferred to move to the Bears as a playcalling offensive coordinator, and Stenavich got his promotion from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator in Green Bay.
Even though Stenavich is not a playcaller, he's credited with helping head coach Matt LaFleur with gameplans, especially in the run game.
Back in November, Steno was mentioned by NFL Network's insider Tom Pelissero as a potential future head coach. He also made A to Z Sports' list of potential head coaches in 2025.
Adam Stenavich was an NFL player from 2006 to 2010. He started his coaching career at Michigan, and also worked at Northern Arizona and San Jose State. He moved to the NFL in 2017 and spent two seasons as the assistant offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers.
In 2019, when LaFleur was hired as the Packers head coach, Steno made the inaugural staff as the offensive line coach. He was promoted to run game coordinator in 2021, in addition to his OL duties, and promoted to offensive coordinator one year later.
Major impact
Adam Stenavich might not be seen as a favorite to land the Bears' HC job. But if he gets it, LaFleur would have to look for a replacement. Internally, the most likely candidate would be passing game coordinator Jason Vrable, who's been in Green Bay since 2019, primarily working with wide receivers.
Luke Getsy is also back with the Packers, but with a part-time role as a defensive consultant, after failed stints as a playcalling offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.
