The Green Bay Packers are losing an offensive weapon, a defensive depth option, and a key special teamer all at once. Cornerback and wide receiver Bo Melton is out for the playoffs after suffering a knee injury against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said on Wednesday it’s not a long-term injury, but it’s serious enough to force the Packers to place Melton on injured reserve. Because IR forces a player to miss at least four games, Melton will only be able to return in the 2026 season.

“He’ll be on IR, unfortunately,” LaFleur explained. “That’s a big loss for us, just a Swiss Army knife. There’s nothing he can’t do. I love the energy he brings to our football team. He’s a great competitor. The moment’s never too big. You’ve seen him make plays in all three phases. It’s unfortunate, but somebody else is going to have to step up.”

Three-phase player

During training camp, Bo Melton made his transition from wide receiver to cornerback. In the preseason, he played 80 defensive snaps as he tried to learn the system and adapt to the new position. Curiously enough, it wasn’t necessary in the regular season.

In games that count, Bo Melton ended up playing 96 snaps on offense and 185 on special teams. He finished the season with four catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. On special teams, Melton played 68 snaps on kick return, 28 on kick coverage, 49 on punt return, 39 on punt coverage, and two on field goal block units. That included 19 kick returns, 16 punt returns, and three tackles.

Depth at those positions

At wide receiver, the Packers have Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Matthew Golden, Dontayvion Wicks, and recently-promoted Jakobie Keeney-James — Savion Williams is also on IR.

At cornerback, Green Bay went through a forced transformation last week. Beyond Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine, who started most of the season, the rest of the group is full of new names: Trevon Diggs, claimed off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, and three players promoted from the practice squad in Jaylin Simpson, Shemar Bartholomew, and Johnathan Baldwin. Safety Javon Bullard also helps as a primary slot corner.

On special teams, it will be a collective effort to replace Melton. The good news is that linebacker and special teamer Nick Niemann has been designated to return from IR last week and has a realistic shot at returning this week.

Bo Melton arrived in Green Bay late in his rookie season, back in 2022. With three accrued seasons in the NFL, he’s slated to become a restricted free agent in March.
