The Green Bay Packers have a tough decision to make with cornerback Jaire Alexander. He missed basically half the games over the last four years with multiple injuries, and 2024 was an especially tough year with 10 missed games because of groin and knee injuries.
It's unclear right now, but it's hard to imagine Jaire returning to Green Bay in 2025, particularly under his current $17.5 million salary.
On Thursday, general manager Brian Gutekunst had his end-of-season press conference and touched the topic.
"We'll work through that. Certainly, we can (afford him if they want to). I know it's been really frustrating for not only him as a player, but us as a club," Gutekunst said. "When you have a player that has done what he's done for us in the past, and then not being able to get him on the field consistently, that's tough. It's tough on the player, it's tough on the organization."
Despite the struggles, Gutekunst understands that Alexander is still an impactful player when available. Therefore, keeping him is not out of the equation—even though it certainly seems unlikely at this point.
"We're at the beginning stages, just kind of gathering information as a whole before we start looking at next year and how we're gonna lay this thing out," the GM added. "But we could. Obviously, when he's healthy and he's ready to play, he's a pretty good player."
When asked if there was a disconnect between the player and the organization regarding his health status, Gutekunst was clear.
"No," Gutekunst affirmed. "Again, there's frustration on both sides by the fact that he can't get out there, and that's tough. I feel for him, because he wants to be out there and he wants to play. But there is no disconnect."
Based on how the Packers have handled similar situations, it doesn't seem like Jaire Alexander's future will be in Green Bay. But it's usually about the money, and those conversations will decide what ultimately happens.
