Packers’ Christian Watson doesn’t hold back with fiery comments right after reaching key checkpoint in his recovery from knee injury
Wide receiver is getting close to his return to game action.
Christian Watson is almost there. Nine months after his knee injury back in January, the fourth-year wide receiver returned to practice on Monday as the Green Bay Packers opened up his 21-day practice window returning from the physically unable to perform list.
Watson clearly doesn’t look like a player who suffered such a serious injury earlier this year. He moved well and seems truly close to being fully available to play. His words confirm that perception, which should leave Packers fans truly excited about what’s next.
“It felt great. Obviously, I was super anxious to get back to football. It meant a lot to me to be able to get out there,” Watson said in the locker room after practice. “I think that was always the plan. It just depended on how I was feeling, and I’ve been feeling really good. So I had a good opportunity.”
The plan for Watson to return
The Packers now have three weeks to activate Christian Watson to the 53-man roster. He can be activated at any point, but he should be back to play the Carolina Panthers in Week 9 at the latest. Realistically, it’s not absurd to think that Watson can be ready to play the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7 or the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8.
“Obviously, it’s been a while since I’ve been able to go out there and play football,” Watson mentioned. “From just my confidence and running and everything, it felt really good. I’m just excited to continue.”
Even without Watson, the Packers have been able to put a prolific offensive product on the field. The team is fourth in EPA/play and eighth in success rate so far this season.
Now, it’s time for Christian Watson to “knock a little bit of rust off”, as the player himself said. But a big part of the offense is getting ready to return, and putting Watson on top of what the unit has done so far is an exciting proposition.
