The Green Bay Packers are already dealing with some injury drama after both Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs missed the first practice of the 2023 season and it's left some big questions as to who will step up if they can't play against the Chicago Bears.
Both guys are easily the top-2 receivers on the roster. Behind them at receiver, specifically, is nothing but a second-year player in Samori Toure (who has a grand total of five career catches) and three rookies – one of which was an undrafted free agent.
Sure, we are talking about young, dynamic players that have a lot of potential. But we aren't in training camp nor are we playing in the preseason anymore. These are the reps that win or lose games and the intensity increases dramatically.
Fortunately for the Packers, the other receivers aren't the only pass-catchers on the team. Let's take a look at the top options if Watson and Doubs aren't able to play on Sunday.
RB Aaron Jones
Jones is easily the No. 1 choice, here. The former Pro Bowler is a do-it-all player that has caught 242 balls for 1,843 yards and 17 touchdowns over the course of his six seasons in the NFL. The receptions and yardage are eight-most among all running backs and the touchdowns are tied for the fourth-most among all RBs since 2017.
Jones worked on his receiving skill set over the summer and that should come in handy throughout the season, but especially on Sunday if the Packers need him to shoulder some of the extra load.
Jones is already an important and versatile cog in the Packers' passing game. Per Pro Football Focus, Jones ran routes on 85.2% of pass plays in which he was on the field, which was sixth-most among running backs with at least 34 targets in 2022. He lined up out wide at the second-highest rate (12.9%) and in the slot at the ninth-highest rate (11.6%).
He made efficient use of his opportunities, as well. His 1.25 yards per route ran checked in at No. 13 of the 32 qualifying players.
"He's an explosive player in the run game and the pass game," Packers QB Jordan Love told reporters after Wednesday's practice. "He's definitely a guy we gotta get the ball to and let him go do what he does: make plays…
"… The more we can use him, the better."
WR Jayden Reed
Sure, the rookie hasn't played a single down in an actual NFL game, but that doesn't mean he can't be utilized in a big way on Sunday. So far, he's shown that he can make plays and a lot of that stems from not just his skill set, but from his preparation.
"I don't feel too much of nerves but I feel like it'll hit close to the game to be honest. But I feel very confident about the playbook and everything and you know, that just builds my confidence for the game," Reed told reporters Wednesday.
Reed is a very versatile player that can play both on the perimeter and in the slot. He's expected to be the Packers' primary slot receiver, but it'll certainly be interesting to monitor how much outside action he receives on Sunday. Don't be surprised if you see a few deep shots go his way.
And, there's also the opportunity to use him on jet sweeps, end-arounds, and things of that nature. Reed is the perfect weapon for this offense and can be very useful against the Bears.
TE Luke Musgrave
Another option, another rookie pass-catcher for the Packers. But hey, that was expected with Musgrave once he was selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Musgrave can be lined up all over the formation and his speed and athleticism make him a major mismatch for any defense. The Bears made some solid defensive upgrades over the offseason, but, those guys are learning a new defense just like Musgrave is learning a new offense. So, there will certainly be lapses he can take advantage of.
It will be interesting to see how he responds to the Bears' zone defense. If this were a more man-to-man style secondary, Musgrave would probably be able to win a lot of the battles, but a rookie playing the mental game is always a volatile prospect heading into a game.
Either way, expect the Packers to look Musgrave's way in the no-Watson-and-no-Doubs universe.
WR Samori Toure
Hey, he's the most experienced guy on the roster, right? That has to account for something?
It actually does, in this instance. Remember how I mentioned Reed on the outside? Well, Toure playing the slot allows that to happen. And, the best part is Toure can play outside, too, when it's called for. He certainly won't pigeonhole the offense, or anything like that.
It's a nice opportunity for Toure to really settle into the season and maybe even make a case to move up a notch above Reed. If Watson and Doubs don't go, Toure could certainly have a nice start to his 2023 season.
Honorable mentions (in order from most likely to be targeted to least likely): RB A.J. Dillon, WR Dontayvion Wicks, WR Malik Heath, TE Tucker Kraft
