The Green Bay Packers will need another quarterbacks coach for 2025, since veteran Tom Clements decided to retire after working (again) for the franchise for the last three seasons.
Head coach Matt LaFleur didn't indicate if he will just promote from within or look for an external addition. But if he is willing to go the latter route, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky seems to be ready to take it.
In an interaction on X (formerly known as Twitter), the current ESPN analyst said that it would be an honor to get the job after being mentioned by a follower.
Orlovsky played 13 seasons in the NFL. A fifth-round pick in 2005 (same draft class as Aaron Rodgers), Orlovsky was mostly a backup for the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lions again, and Los Angeles Rams.
His last job in the NFL was as Jared Goff's backup quarterback when the Rams had just hired Sean McVay as their head coach in 2017. He spent training camp there, but was released and retired. He would immediately be hired by ESPN, a role he's had since.
Orlovsky doesn't have any type of coaching experience.
Internal options
The Packers have some internal candidates if Matt LaFleur doesn't want to add an external coach to such a pivotal role. Fellow former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion is perceived as a future head coach and he spent the 2024 season, his first after retirement, as an offensive assistant. Another option is Connor Lewis, the assistant quarterbacks coach, who's known for his analytics prowess.
The third internal alternative is Luke Getsy, who returned to the Packers during the season as a defensive consultant. He was the quarterbacks coach in Green Bay between 2019 and 2021, a period that included two MVP awards for Aaron Rodgers. In the last two of those years, he was also a passing game coordinator. He left Green Bay to have failed experiences as an offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.
