The Green Bay Packers have already shown how they handle adversity. Now, this young team should show how they handle success. After three wins as an underdog, the Packers put themselves in position to make the playoffs, but for that to happen they need a strong finish against lesser opponents until the end of the regular season.
The first step is on Monday night, against the New York Giants. Check out who are five Packers important pieces projecting the game on primetime.
Dontayvion Wicks
Wicks has been a revelation for the Packers this season. He’s impressively polished for a fifth-round pick and has generated immediate impact for the offense. Wicks has had fewer snaps since Christian Watson came back from injury early in the season, but with Watson injured again, Wicks’ role will get bigger.
And now, he looks more ready to be even more useful. Wicks is the best separator of the Packers offense.
"He's a guy that we’ve got to continue to try to get more opportunities for in our offense," Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said earlier this season. "He's shown the ability. Not only is he a great route runner, but he's a pretty tenacious blocker."
The Packers still have the 11 personnel as the most frequent grouping on the field, so Wicks will start alongside Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed.
Josh Myers
The center hasn’t been a consistent player throughout his NFL career, and the comparison with Creed Humphrey, drafted right after him, will always be tough. But Myers has played better lately, including one of his best games of the season against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. It was certainly his most complete game: the first time in 2023 that Myers had PFF grades over 70 both in pass and run blocking.
The Giants have a relatively strong interior of the defensive line, so the Packers interior players have got a huge responsibility to protect Jordan Love and to open up holes. When they play well, AJ Dillon is much more effective, and Myers is a big part of the puzzle.
Kenny Clark
Clark is tied for the lead among Packers players in pressures this season (41), the same number as Rashan Gary. It’s probably not the best season for the defensive tackle, but he’s still highly capable as a pass rusher.
Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito has averaged more than three seconds to throw, and if the Packers are able to generate quick interior pressure, it will be a long night for the Giants offense.
Green Bay has other interesting pieces to pressure from inside, like Devonte Wyatt and Karl Brooks, but Kenny Clark is still the premier player at the position.
De'Vondre Campbell
If I ask you to choose the best Giants offensive playmaker, I have zero doubt that your choice will be Saquon Barkley. And the running back was a big part of the reason why the Giants beat the Packers last season in London.
If the Packers are able to limit Barkley this time around, it’s hard to foresee a scenario in which Green Bay loses. Especially with Quay Walker handling a shoulder injury, the former All-Pro linebacker is expected to have a big responsibility both stopping the run and covering Saquon in space.
Carrington Valentine
It’s still early to know, but the Packers can have Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes back on Monday night. Either way, the coaching staff tends to be conservative to protect players coming off injuries. Rookie Jalin Hyatt had the best game of his career before the Giants bye, with five receptions for 109 yards against the New England Patriots. So, Valentine’s role will be decisive for Hyatt not to repeat that performance.
Among rookies, Valentine is the fourth best in yards per target allowed through 13 weeks, just behind Devon Witherspoon, Jaylon Jones, and Brian Branch. The Packers are pretty happy with the performance of their seventh-round pick, and he has an opportunity to keep the positive trajectory.
