One of the most unfortunate parts of the offseason is the inevitability of having to say goodbye to some franchise favorites. Especially when they need to be released. The Green Bay Packers are no exception.
At the moment, the main focus of the Packers is the transition from the Aaron Rodgers era to Jordan Love. However, whoever is QB1 next season in Green Bay will likely have to do so without one of their best players.
OT David Bakhtiari is a three-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler, who's considered one of the best offensive tackles when healthy. When healthy being the issue.
Bakhtiari, who will be 32 this year, has only played in 26 regular season games in the last three years. Missing time with injuries such as both a torn ACL and meniscus leaving reoccurring issues in the knee as well as back issues.
While Bakhtiari played to his usual self down the stretch of the season, he is expendable at this point in his career and the Green Bay Packers have options on the offensive line as currently constructed.
Primarily with Elgton Jenkins, who signed a massive extension this season.
The Packers can save $17.3 million in cap space with a post-June 1st designation release. By far the biggest savings under the team's current cap.
It is going to be hard for Packers faithful to say goodbye to Rodgers. Having to say goodbye to their long-time prized left tackle will be another tough pill to swallow.
