The Green Bay Packers erased a major offseason question on Tuesday morning.
Green Bay had to make a decision on picking up quarterback Jordan Love's fifth-year option before Tuesday afternoon.
The Packers didn't pick up the option. Instead, they agreed to a new contract with Love that keeps the former Utah State standout in Green Bay through the 2024 season.
According to multiple reports, the Packers signed Love to essentially a one-year extension.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday that Green Bay's deal with Love is worth up to $22.5 million with $13.5 million in guaranteed money.
Pelissero noted that the fifth-year option would've cost the Packers around $20 million (all guaranteed).
This is a really nice move by Green Bay. For starters, they're not completely committed to Love longterm. They still get to see if he has what it takes to be a franchise quarterback for the Packers.
The new deal with Love also allows Green Bay to manipulate their 2024 salary cap a bit easier. The fifth-year option would've been completely guaranteed and it would've been a $20 million-ish cap hit no matter what.
This deal will also give the Packers a chance to work out an extension with Love if he proves to be the guy. If it's obvious after 2023 that Love is the answer for Green Bay, I'd look for a new contract to be worked out before the 2024 season. At worst, the Packers have an ineffective Love in 2024 and they have to continue their search for a franchise quarterback. At best, Love proves to be a Pro Bowl-caliber starter that the coaching staff believes in. It's a win/win deal for Green Bay in what was a tough situation to navigate.
