The Green Bay Packers had a Super Bowl-caliber team in 2021.

But despite being the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the Packers watched the NFC Championship Game and the Super Bowl from home.

Green Bay lost 13-10 to the San Francisco 49ers at Lambeau Field in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

The loss was surprising to Green Bay players. And maybe that's why the loss happened.

Packers defensive back Eric Stokes spoke to Jim Rome this week about the loss and he made some revealing comments.

"You can ask anybody on our roster — we did not see that coming, we did not see that loss coming," said Stokes of the loss to the 49ers.

"I honestly don't know what happened," added Stokes when asked if Green Bay wasn't prepared for the game. "That's something we still talk about."

There's being confident and then there's being overconfident. And it certainly feels like the Packers were overconfident going into that game.

In the NFL, any team can lose on any given Sunday. That's even more true during the playoffs. A loss is always on the table. It sounds like Green Bay should have taken the 49ers more seriously.

With the return of Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams, the Packers will once again be Super Bowl favorites in 2022.

But if they don't change their approach come playoff time, it could be one-and-done once again.

Green Bay's Super Bowl window isn't going to stay open forever — Rodgers is nearing the end of his career. The Packers have been lucky to have two generational quarterbacks in a row in Rodgers and Brett Favre. But to walk away from those two careers with only two Super Bowls would be a massive letdown (and that might be an understatement).

The Packers can't afford to let another year without hoisting the Lombardi Trophy pass them by.
