The big 34-0 win over the New Orleans Saints was enough for the Green Bay Packers to clinch a playoff spot. The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings' wins on Sunday had taken the Packers out of the NFC North title race. So there's not a lot for Green Bay to play over the final two weeks of the regular season, right? Well, not so fast.
Playoff seeding is still huge, and the Packers can get anywhere from the fifth through the seventh seed in the NFC.
"We have a big test next week, to go on the road in a short week, with a Holiday," head coach Matt LaFleur said after the Saints game on Monday. "It's never easy, especially going into Minnesota. It's one of the tougher places to play, against a team that's playing as good as anybody in the National Football League. We gotta flip the script here really quickly and get onto the Vikings."
Over the final two weeks, the Packers play at the Minnesota Vikings and versus the Chicago Bears.
5th seed
The battle to surpass the Vikings is complicated, because the rival is 13-2 in the season, while the Packers are 11-4. So the combination is pretty simple. Green Bay has to win out, and the Vikings have to lose out — after their head-to-head matchup in Week 17, the Vikings play the Detroit Lions in Week 18. Right now, it seems like the fifth seed will play the NFC South Champion, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Atlanta Falcons, in the wild card round.
6th seed
This is the most likely place for the Packers, but it's still not secured. The Washington Commanders are one game behind Green Bay, but they would have a tie-breaking advantage in case both teams finish with the same record.
The Commanders play at the Atlanta Falcons and versus the Dallas Cowboys over the next two weeks. If they win out, the Packers are forced to win out as well to keep the sixth seed. In this scenario, the Packers will probably face the Los Angeles Rams in the wild card round.
7th seed
If the Commanders win more games than the Packers over the final two weeks, Green Bay will get the seventh seed — just like they did in 2023. Most likely, it will be against the NFC East Champion once again. This time around, though, the Philadelphia Eagles would be on the way. This is the hardest path and would include games against the second and first seed in the NFC just to reach the conference championship game.
Last year, the Packers became the first seventh seed to win a playoff game in history. So far, no seventh seed has gone beyond the divisional round.
It will be basically impossible for the Packers to have their seed locked in after Week 17, so there will be something to play for until the end. If that happens, Matt LaFleur will have to balance his priorities and make a decision to rest his starters or not in Week 18 against the Bears. So far, though, they are on to Minnesota.
