Packers let their true intentions show with strategic decisions at a premium position that’s hard to overlook
Green Bay is handling Lukas Van Ness’ foot injury, so general manager Brian Gutekunst decided to take a look at some experienced players to evaluate the roster situation.
The Green Bay Packers are preparing themselves for the possibility of missing Lukas Van Ness for a few games. At least, that’s what their latest decision at the edge position indicates. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Packers are working out three edge rushers this week, including a former third-round pick.
The players are Andrew Farmer, DJ Johnson, and Jeremiah Moon.
Van Ness left Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals late in the fourth quarter with a foot injury suffered during a sack on Joe Flacco. On Monday, the former first-rounder went through an MRI that showed it’s not a long-term injury, but head coach Matt LaFleur said it’s still up in the air if Van Ness will miss time — and if so, how much.
Who are the players the Packers are working out
The most notable name amongst the three is DJ Johnson, a third-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2023. After spending his first two full seasons in Charlotte, he was waived by the Panthers late in September. In 31 games, he’s had half a sack and four pressures.
Andrew Farmer has played for the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos, with two pressures in eight games for the Chargers two years ago. Fellow undrafted Jeremiah Moon has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, with three pressures in 21 career games.
In addition to the names Wilson reported, the Packers also worked out former Las Vegas Raiders edge Jah Joyner, an undrafted rookie.
They are all more like practice squad options at this point, but it’s relevant to have some extra experience.
Packers’ edge depth
Lukas Van Ness is the third player on the edge rotation, behind starters Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary. If he misses time, that will mean more snaps for Kingsley Enagbare and rookie Barryn Sorrell.
The Packers still have Brenton Cox (IR) and rookie Collin Oliver (PUP) available to return at some point this season, but it’s unclear when that will happen. Arron Mosby is on the practice squad and could be elevated if needed.
