It looks like Jordan Love likes to play Thanksgiving football. Last year, he played at a high level, allowing the Green Bay Packers to upset the Detroit Lions. On Thursday, he had his best game of the season and helped Green Bay to beat the Miami Dolphins at Lambeau Field.
This time around, though, he was finally able to eat some Turkey leg.
“It was special. The joke is I did not get a Turkey leg last year, so to be able to come in here, get the win, get the Turkey leg after. It was very delicious,” Love said after the game. “Just a little something to celebrate.”
Jordan Love completed 75% of his passes for 274 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions (for the second game in a row). He finished the game with a 129.2 passer rating, which is the best of his season so far.
For Love, taking care of the ball is a big part of his focus, and his ability to avoid bad plays hás been huge over the last few weeks.
"The biggest thing starts with just taking care of the ball," Love added. "That's something that I've been focusing on, I've just tried to do a better job, because it starts there. Not putting our defense in bad positions and easy on the other team. Just going out there and finding completions, getting the ball in the playmakers' hands. You see these guys, once they catch the ball, they're making some big-time YAC (yards after the catch). That's the key to our offense. My job is to continue to focus on being great keeping taking care of the ball."
On Thursday, the Packers had their most complete performance of the season. The offense scored 30 points with a solid and productive night, the defense held an explosive offense to 17 points — and most of it when the game was basically out of hand for Miami —, and special teams had big plays.
For Love, complementary football is exactly what the roster is trying to accomplish.
“Since we got back from the bye week, it's been the focus, it's playing complementary ball. The last couple of games, we've been doing that,” Love stressed. “It takes everybody, defense being able to get stops and generating turnovers. Special teams making a game-changing play, which they did tonight, and the offense being able to capitalize whenever we get those sudden-change scenarios, great field position, and just playing off the defense. The name of the game for us is playing complementary ball, playing off each other, and taking advantage of those situations. That's when we're at our best, when we're playing off each other.”
Now, the Packers are 9-3, and they have basically secured a playoff spot. Next week, they play on Thursday again, and the game against the Detroit Lions will decide if the team has a real shot at winning the NFC North or if it will have to endure a wild card reality in the postseason.
