Jordan Love sets record straight on Matt LaFleur’s job security following a heartfelt playoff loss that leaves the Packers searching for answers
Matt LaFleur has one year left on his contract.
Matt LaFleur did not want to talk about his job security or his future with the Green Bay Packers after a tough playoff loss to the Chicago Bears. After leading 21-3 at halftime, the Packers lost 28-6 in the second, 31-27 total, being eliminated in the wild-card round for the second consecutive year.
But if LaFleur thought it was too early to talk about his future, quarterback Jordan Love showed big support for his head coach.
“Yeah, I definitely think Matt should be the head coach,” Love said after the game. “I’ve got a lot of love for Matt. I think he does a great job. That’s it.”
This is a natural response, and you would expect Love to publicly criticize LaFleur. After all, the head coach has been a big part of his development as an NFL quarterback.
Uncomfortable reality
The Packers had a rough second half, and it cost them a spot in the divisional round of the playoffs. It’s hard to look ahead so early after the elimination, but Jordan Love tried to express his feelings about what happened and about what’s ahead for the franchise.
“Everybody knows what the situation is,” Love added. “It’s disappointing. We let one get away from us. Not much to say. We’ll get back to it and go from there. Attack the offseason. The same message that comes with any offseason is to try to find ways to get better and get back to work. But it’s very disappointing right now.”
Matt LaFleur’s contract situation
The talk about Matt LaFleur’s job security started back in the offseason when new president Ed Policy said he wouldn’t extend the head coach or general manager Brian Gutekunst before the season, but at the same time, he doesn’t like to have a lame duck coach.
Because Gutekunst and LaFleur are under contract through 2026, the 2025 season was going to be a key point of reference for deciding whether to make a new deal. LaFleur reached the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years, the third consecutive time with Love at quarterback, but the postseason results remain underwhelming, especially given how the team lost.
It will be a long offseason in Green Bay.
