Another key update is about to make the Packers defense even better in 2025, and it has nothing to do with Micah Parsons
Big free agent acquisition is getting ready to play.
The Green Bay Packers had two huge moves to add to the defense in 2025. The most recent one, obviously, was the blockbuster trade to acquire Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys. Early in the offseason process, though, the team had signed cornerback Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million contract in free agency. And after missing training camp time with a knee injury, Hobbs is getting ready to return.
Hobbs was still not practicing on Monday due to a knee injury. However, he did some individual work along the sidelines, an indication that he will be back soon. And if he is available on Sunday to play the Detroit Lions, his aggressive style and alignment versatility would be huge for the Packers’ defense that lacks star power in the cornerback room.
Nate Hobbs could have played through his knee injury, but him and the Packers decided to act early and go with a small surgery. Hopefully, that process would make Hobbs feel more comfortable throughout the entire season. When the injury was announced, the expectation was always that Hobbs would be ready to go in Week 1.
With Hobbs on the field, the Packers would likely go with him as a boundary cornerback opposite Keisean Nixon. Safety Javon Bullard would play in the slot. If Hobbs can’t go, Carrington Valentine enters the lineup.
Returns
The Packers resumed their preparations to face the Lions on Monday with more positive pieces of news. Wide receiver Jayden Reed (foot) practiced, while safety Zayne Anderson, rookie wide receiver Savion Williams, and rookie edge defender Barryn Sorrell all returned from injuries.
Besides Nate Hobbs, the only other player out of practice was center Elgton Jenkins. If he isn’t available on Sunday, the Packers would have to move right guard Sean Rhyan inside to center, with last year’s first-round pick Jordan Morgan at guard.
