The Green Bay Packers were reportedly trying to acquire DK Metcalf, but the Seattle Seahawks were holding firm in their stance to require a big compensation. The Packers point has just become more realistic now.

According to multiple reports, Metcalf has requested a trade from the Seahawks, and the team decided to further explore trade scenarios.

Metcalf will enter the final year of the three-year extension he signed back in 2022. The wide receiver is slated to make $18 million. However, part of the point of looking for another team is that Metcalf, 27, wants another contract extension.

Reportedly, the Seahawks wanted a high draft pick and a young receiver. The Packers probably wouldn’t be comfortable giving up a first-round pick because it would be the combination of a top pick, a cheap player, and the big contract.

“When you trade a high pick for a veteran player, you're trading a young, really good contract for a player who's proven, but probably expensive, so you're giving up a pick and salary cap space,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said after the season. “You gotta weigh that. If it's the right player, if you can feel he can be a dynamic player that can change your football team, you gotta consider that, because there's not many of those guys out there. But you also have to understand what you're giving up.”

With Metcald officially requesting a trade, maybe the Seahawks are more open to a lower compensation. In this case, let’s say, the Packers could send a Day 2 draft pick, wide receiver Romeo Doubs (who’s entering the final year of his rookie deal), and find a common ground to extend Metcalf.

A second-round pick in 2019, Metcalf was highly regarded by the Packers as well—however, at the time, they decided to select guard Elgton Jenkins with their second-rounder. Since entering the league, Metcalf has been a top receiving option.

A deep threat, he is impressively consistent, reaching 900+ receiving yards in each of his six NFL seasons. Last year, he had 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns. He was a Second-Team All-Pro in 2020 and a Pro Bowler in 2020 and 2023.

Financial implications

NFL teams plan their cap three years in advance. That means the Packers possibly projected a big wide receiver contract for Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs. However, as they both failed to reach the level of a big veteran extension piece, moving on from Doubs, for instance, and using the cap space with another veteran is a worthwhile proposition—be that Metcalf or another top player, like Brandon Aiyuk.
