Latest massive coaching news gives Packers a huge opportunity, but actually making it happen is far from easy
Jeff Stoutland left the Eagles.
Legendary offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland stepped away from the Philadelphia Eagles, marking a massive coaching update this offseason. Stoutland had been with the Eagles since 2013 and as a run game coordinator since 2018.
Immediately after the news broke, Green Bay Packers fans across social media started asking for Matt LaFleur to check in on Stoutland, one of the top offensive line developers in football. But if you look at the reasons why Stoutland left the Eagles, it will be hard for the Packers to convince him.
Offensive say
According to ESPN’s Tim McManus, the offensive reconstruction going on in Philly was the main reason for Stoutland’s decision to leave. And that included the offensive change going to Sean Mannion, the former Packers quarterbacks coach, who will now be the play-calling offensive coordinator for the Eagles.
“Another wrinkle emerged with the hiring of the 33-year-old Mannion as offensive coordinator last week,” McManus wrote. “Mannion is slated to install a new scheme that will pull from the Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan systems. Given that Stoutland doesn’t have a history with that offense, he would have needed someone to bring him up to speed on the new system, a source noted.”
Via McManus, head coach Nick Sirianni and then-offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo began incorporating different run designs last year, and Stoutland wasn’t appropriately consulted on the changes. He was offered a position on this year’s staff, but wasn’t happy with the development of the offensive philosophy.
Why it’s hard for the Packers to pull it off
McManus added that the veteran is not expected to coach in 2026. But even if there is still some level of interest in coaching this season, the Packers are probably not the most likely landing spot. The lack of familiarity with the scheme was one of the main reasons he left Philly, and it wouldn’t make sense to join a team that runs it.
The Packers have offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich and offensive line coach Luke Butkus, and both handle the line and support the run game. Ideally, the Packers add Stoutland as an assistant head coach of sorts to help with player development, but it’s unlikely Stoutland would want this role without much say on how the run game is built.
Offensive staff
So far, the Packers haven’t executed any changes along the offensive coaching staff — except for Mannion. LaFleur is still in the process of finding his successor as the next quarterbacks coach.
The top names on the offensive staff are coordinator Adam Stenavich, passing game coordinator Jason Vrable, and offensive line coach Luke Butkus — a lineup that has largely been in place since 2022, when Nathaniel Hackett left the Packers to become the Denver Broncos head coach.
