Matthew Golden makes decision that’s about far more than football and delivers a moment Packers fans won’t soon forget
Family comes first for the Packers rookie wide receiver
Some things in life are bigger than football. Reaching the professional level was always a goal for Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden, not only to keep his dream alive, but to help those he loves. Right after being drafted, Golden’s first decision was to buy a home for his grandmother.
Real estate company Remax shared a content about the process, and they found a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Kohrville, Texas, located just two miles from where Matthew grew up and located in the neighborhood where he lived in high school. Golden worked with Nimesh Patel, Broker/Owner of Remax Fine Properties in Texas, to navigate the home search and purchase process.
“It was such a blessing to work with Remax and Nimesh to help me achieve this goal. My grandmother has done so much for me, and I’m humbled to be able to give back to her in this way,” Golden explained. “While we weren’t able to purchase our family home, we’ve found a house in an area that’s also meaningful to me. Home is where my family is and I’m excited for us to enjoy many meals, holidays and football watch parties together.”
Patel has donated his commission from the home sale to Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals, which raises funds for children’s hospitals in the United States and Canada.
The 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft, Matthew Golden signed a fully-guaranteed four-year, $17.575 million deal with the Packers. He received a $9.422 million signing bonus as part of his rookie contract. A starter in his first preseason game, against the New York Jets, Golden registered a seven-yard catch from Jordan Love in his NFL action debut.
College trajectory
Former Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden has taken the road less traveled to get to where he is today. You don’t often see top-150 caliber recruits sign with the Houston Cougars, especially at the wide receiver position. That’s exactly what Golden did back in the 2022 recruiting class. After inconsistent receiver production, but outstanding flashes and special teams impact in three seasons, Golden opted for the transfer portal prior to the 2024 college football season. He landed with the Texas Longhorns, and the rest was history.
After a slow start last season, Golden came on strong and became the go to option for the Longhorns down the stretch. Golden has some nice inside-out versatility, having played a lot of Z receiver for Texas. He also has the smoothness and natural feel to play inside in the slot as well, understanding how to manipulate zone coverage and find soft spots of the defense. His quickness and technical refinement make him a high upside route runner, who should at worst, become a high end WR2 on the NFL level.
The 4.2-speed doesn’t quite show up on film for Golden, but he plays plenty fast to make some plays down the field. If it does start to show up more regularly, Golden has a chance to develop into a stellar multi-level threat with even more upside than some expect.
