Micah Parsons’ selfless answer on his debut impact shows Packers landed a player ready to lift the team
Edge rusher shared the merits of big win over the Lions.
Despite the backlash from Dallas after Micah Parsons’ trade, the edge defender has been an impressively positive presence for the Green Bay Packers early on — and not only on the football field, but in the locker room as well.
Parsons had a great debut, especially for a player who had no training camp and had been acquired by the Packers just 10 days prior. In the 27-13 win over the Detroit Lions, he played 29 snaps, with three pressures and a sack.
After the game, though, Parsons showed the type of teammate he is. Beyond his individual performance, he took a moment to praise his new teammates.
“You look at that defense, a lot of people underestimated those young guys,” Parsons said. “And you see DY [Devonte Wyatt] and you see Colby [Wooden], them guys stepping up in the run. I think how many times they’re rushing, we have them 50 yards rushing. So we got some real dogs up front.”
Instead of talking about how he made the entire defense look better when he was on the field, Parsons focused on how his teammates allowed him to be more efficient.
“That allows me to take my time, get all the way back,” Parsons explained. “You see Van Ness, you see KB [Karl Brooks], you see Rashan [Gary], you know, I don’t got to be in a rush to get back. This team is so loaded, the sky’s the limit, and I think we’re going to be a really good football team.”
Heartache with the Cowboys
Parsons was clearly emotional after the game and talked about how his relationship with the Cowboys ended.
“These last six months were super draining, super toxic for everyone,” Parsons admitted. “It’s something that I don’t think any player should have to go through. The fact that I was traded a week before the season was really outrageous and rough. It’s something where I could’ve been with these guys getting better and better, and we could’ve had probably an even more dominant start.”
And less than two weeks in on his Packers stint, Parsons finally feels wanted.
“These guys embraced me. They believe in my talents,” he said. “They believed in me, and I’m just gonna give these guys everything I have, because I know what’s at stake and I know what they gave up for me to be here. I’m going to do what it takes for us to win.”
Cheetah Package
The Packers relied on an intriguing defensive package, which is internally called “Cheetah,” to have three defensive ends on the field at the same time. On one of those plays, Lukas Van Ness moved inside and got a sack on Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
“Van Ness is going to have his best year yet,” Parsons mentioned. “I’m going to make sure of it. That guy is a very selfless player, he’s very selfless. He’s one of those guys that can go anywhere, he plays the run, he does everything. He’s the high-quality player that you just want to be around.”
The early signs couldn’t be better, and Parsons has been exactly what the Packers wanted and needed, on and off the field.
