Micah Parsons shares mixed reaction after Packers pull off a significant trade just ahead of the NFL free agency frenzy
Green Bay acquired Zaire Franklin from the Colts.
The Green Bay Packers made a big move even before the start of free agency, and Micah Parsons has just acted like a true fan. First, the excitement for getting another defensive player to the mix. Then, the realization that general manager Brian Gutekunst sent a valuable part of the defensive front as part of the deal.
On Saturday, the Packers acquired off-ball linebacker Zaire Franklin from the Indianapolis Colts for defensive tackle Colby Wooden — and that’s it, no draft picks attached to either side.
Micah Parsons had mixed reactions
At first, star edge defender Micah Parsons was surprised with the move — seemingly on a positive tone.
However, a follower let Parsons know that Wooden was part of the deal, and Parsons was clearly upset with that outcome.
It’s curious because that’s also how Micah Parsons’ own trade happened. At first, it was reported that the Packers had agreed to acquire him from the Dallas Cowboys in a package that involved two first-round picks. Then, there was a report saying a player was involved. Finally, we found out that the player was defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
Now, it’s the second consecutive offseason the Packers use a defensive tackle to acquire another defensive player on a trade. Okay, this is not nearly as impactful as last year’s one was, but it’s interesting how general manager Brian Gutekunst seems willing to move on from the big guys on defense.
Acquiring Zaire Franklin is part of the Packers’ plan to replace Quay Walker. The team tried to keep the former first-round pick, but his market seemed too hot, and Green Bay moved in another direction. Now, Gutekunst will have to scour the market or the draft class to address the DT position.
Just like any Packers fan, Micah Parsons knows this trade has two obvious and dichotomous consequences.
