Packers lose young player at premium position in unexpected fashion right after beating the Steelers
Cornerback Micah Robinson was drafted by the Packers in the seventh round, and now he goes to the Tennessee Titans.
If you talk about a big need on the Green Bay Packers’ roster right now, cornerback is probably the most logical answer. On Monday, the team lost a piece at the position, though, as practice squad cornerback Micah Robinson got signed off the team’s PS to the Tennessee Titans’ active 53-man roster.
Seventh-round rookie Micah Robinson finds a new opportunity
Drafted by the Packers with the 237th overall pick in this year’s draft, Micah Robinson made the 53-man roster but was cut by Green Bay one day after that. He cleared waivers and returned to the practice squad.
However, NFL rules state that PS players are available to sign elsewhere. The Titans traded Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams, opening up a roster spot and creating a need at the position, so signing Robinson was a logical move in Nashville. Now, the Titans have to keep Micah Robinson on their active roster for at least three weeks.
Robinson was elevated for gameday by the Packers twice this season, but the rookie ended up not playing a single snap.
Depth at CB
On the 53-man roster, the Packers have Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, Carrington Valentine, Kamal Hadden, and converted wide receiver Bo Melton at cornerback. Safety Javon Bullard has also played primarily as a slot corner.
Now that Micah Robinson is gone, the team doesn’t have actual cornerbacks on the practice squad, even though safety Johnathan Baldwin can play cornerback too and spent some time during training camp at the position — especially in the slot.
Curiously, the Packers have drafted multiple cornerbacks in the seventh round over the past few years, but Valentine is the only success story. Last year’s selection Kalen King got cut in August and is now on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad, while Robinson at least has a chance on an active roster elsewhere.
