Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry had said that trading Myles Garrett was off the table. That's why, ultimately, I didn't include the star edge rusher on a list of perfect blockbuster trade targets for the Green Bay Packers.
Hours later, Garrett officially requested a trade from the Browns, though, and that changes everything.
Usually, the Packers and general manager Brian Gutekunst would be hesitant to part ways with a big trade compensation package and a big contract. But Myles Garrett is the exact type of player where this is justified.
"When you trade a high pick for a veteran player, you're trading a young, really good contract for a player who's proven, but probably expensive, so you're giving up a pick and salary cap space," Gutekunst said after the season. "You gotta weigh that. If it's the right player, if you can feel he can be a dynamic player that can change your football team, you gotta consider that, because there's not many of those guys out there. But you also have to understand what you're giving up."
Contract situation
Myles Garrett signed a five-year extension with the Browns back in 2020. He's under contract for two more years, making $19.8 million in 2025 and $25 million in 2026.
That's probably too low based on the current edge market, and giving him a new extension on top of it will be a requirement during the trade.
But Garrett is 29, so a team could comfortably give him a three- or four-year extension and still expect top production for years to come.
In terms of draft compensation, it would certainly be huge. The best example is what the Chicago Bears gave up for Khalil Mack in 2018, and the Las Vegas Raiders received a package including two first-round picks.
It's hard to pay a big package of picks plus the top contract, but if you will do it for any non-quarterback, Myles Garrett is the exact player for it.
"While I've loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won't allow me to be complacent," Garrett said in the statement.
The Packers have what Myles Garrett wants, and Garrett would offer Green Bay an insane defensive ceiling to pair with Rashan Gary. It would be, without a doubt, the best edge duo in the NFL.
Any trade in the league has its risks, but Myles Garrett makes it all worth it. And if the Browns are ultimately open to make it happen, the Packers have to be serious about it.
