NFL.com thinks Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs could make a "Ja'Marr Chase-like" impact in 2022.
Chase burst onto the scene as a rookie last season, setting the NFL record for most receiving yards ever by a rookie wide receiver (1,455 yards, also a Cincinnati Bengals franchise record for most receiving yards in a season)
Doubs was a fourth-round selection by the Packers in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Several Packers rookies should play key roles, from first-rounders Devonte Wyatt and Quay Walker to second-round receiver Christian Watson, who has battled injury this summer. But I'm buying the Doubs training camp hype. Perhaps it's foolish to believe a fourth-round rookie can push a playoff team to new heights, but I love his ability to stretch the field and snatch the ball in impressive fashion. The drops are overblown at this point — remember Chase? — and I'm not too concerned with Aaron Rodgers' critiquing the young wideout in camp (it felt like a savvy vet challenging players he knows need to step up). Maybe Doubs' rookie season ends up resembling something closer to Amon-Ra St. Brown's than Chase's, but in a revamped WR corps in Green Bay, that would be huge to help get the Packers over the playoff hump.
This comparison is interesting because Doubs has struggled with drops this preseason much like Chase did a year ago.
Now, that doesn't mean that Doubs is about to go finish with 1,400 receiving yards in 2022, but it shows us that Doubs' drops shouldn't be a major concern entering the season.
As far as Doubs making a Chase-like impact? I could certainly see him having a breakout season as a rookie and finishing with around 1,000 receiving yards. Much more than that, though, is probably being greedy (1,000 yards as a rookie would be an amazing accomplishment, despite the new benchmark Chase set last season).
One thing to remember is that Chase and Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow already had plenty of chemistry from their time at LSU together. Chase was also the guy for Cincinnati last season.
It's not quite as clear in Green Bay who the guy will be. Or if there will be one primary guy for Aaron Rodgers. However, if that ends up being Doubs, I think it's clear that he'll be up to the challenge.
