NFL hits Packers ascending player with news he didn’t want to hear ahead of game against the Browns

Two weeks of NFL football, and two weeks of Green Bay Packers players being fined for penalties. After safety Xavier McKinney got fined for taunting in Week 1, rising linebacker and special teamer Ty’Ron Hopper was punished by the league this time around.

Ty’Ron Hopper was fined by the league

Hopper had a facemask penalty in the second quarter on a special teams play against the Washington Commanders. Because it was his first offense, Hopper’s fine is $6,891.

A third-round pick in 2024, Ty’Ron Hopper has been an important special teamer on the roster. This training camp, he also put himself in a position to be a defensive contributor — head coach Matt LaFleur mentioned him as the most improved player compared to last season.

Hopper was drafted with the pick the Packers acquired by trading cornerback Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills in 2023. He’s a defensive backup because Green Bay has Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker, but he can still be a useful piece over the next few years.

While it’s tough to see football players losing money like that for normal plays, at least it goes to a good cause. The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support legends in need.

Players are notified of violations and may appeal any ruling. Appeals officers and former NFL players, such as Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, and Jordy Nelson, who are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL/NFLPA, hear cases. The decisions made are final and binding. 

Last year, the Packers were among the least penalized teams in football in this area. In 2024, 543 plays resulted in fines, or 1.16% of all plays in the season.

The potential violations include offenses against game officials, player safety rules or flagrant personal fouls, fighting, sportsmanship, uniform rules, and gang signing.
