The Los Angeles Rams tried to trade Cooper Kupp, but his contract was ultimately too expensive. After all, he will be released at the start of the new league year on Wednesday. As soon as he is officially cut, he is free to sign elsewhere, and the Green Bay Packers might be a team to watch over the next few days.

After being unsuccessful in their attempt to trade for DK Metcalf and not being that interested in signing Davante Adams back, the Packers were named a team to watch for Kupp by NFL insider Aaron Wilson, who covers the league for KPRC2 in Houston. The 33rd Team’s insider Ari Meirov has also mentioned the Packers in the conversation.

The Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans were also mentioned by Wilson as potential destinations for Kupp.

Even though Kupp is 31 and has handled injury issues, the wide receiver is still a productive weapon. Last season, even playing only 12 games, he had 67 receptions for 710 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. Extrapolating that to a 17-game sample size, that would mean 94 receptions for 1,005 yards (which would lead the Packers), and eight touchdowns.

A third-round pick in 2017, Cooper Kupp had an extremely high prime, being the Offensive Player of the Year and the Super Bowl MVP in the 2021 season. In that year, the Pro Bowler got a Triple Crown leading the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

At the same time, Kupp has a track record of injuries limiting his production, which is the reason why he has only had two 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL. Over the last three seasons, he's missed 18 games.

Interesting option

Cooper Kupp is a talented player and would bring production for the Packers' receiving room, but it's an intriguing fit with what the room already has. Throughout his career, Kupp has primarily been a slot player, and the Packers have Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks to play from inside.

On the other hand, the team needs a deep threat while Christian Watson recovers from an ACL injury that is expected to make him miss the start of the regular season.

But without Metcalf and Adams, the Packers might look for other alternatives. Depending on the price, Cooper Kupp might be that short-term answer.

As Kupp will be released by the Rams, he wouldn’t count against the compensatory pick formula.
