The Green Bay Packers are 2-4 and still have one game before the trade deadline, against the Minnesota Vikings. Observing the salary cap situation and how the team has approached its roster-building this year, it's more likely that they will be sellers than buyers. However, it doesn't mean Brian Gutekunst couldn't break his usual modus operandi and acquire a player via in-season trade.

For that to happen, though, it needs to be something that makes sense for the Packers not only for 2023, but also has to have long-term positive implications. Green Bay is building a new team, particularly on offense, so any potential target has to be relatively young and with a potential to be with the Packers beyond this season. Right now, it's not the moment for rentals.

So, let's evaluate five potential trade targets for the Packers.

Offense

WR Courtland Sutton, Denver Broncos

Age: 28
Cap hit: $8 million in 2023, $13.5 million in 2024, $14 million in 2025

Sutton is not as young as the other options you'll see below, but he is still 28. So, presumably, he still has at least two or three seasons at a high level. He's not as cheap either in terms of base salary, therefore the Packers would have to negotiate for the Broncos to absorb part of the money. But Sutton would be less expensive in terms of draft capital, which is important for Green Bay right now, and he's an experienced and solid wide receiver — something the Packers badly need. He is under contract through 2025, and it's hard to find a player of this caliber in free agency.

WR Jerry Jeudy, Denver Broncos

Age: 24
Cap hit: $1.49 million in 2023, $12.99 million in 2024

Talking about Denver Broncos receivers, Jerry Jeudy is reportedly available, and the Broncos are having a hard time to find someone willing to give up a day 2 pick. Let's say the Packers do, and send them a third — which they have burned over the years anyway. Jeudy is still extremely young, so he fits perfectly the Packers roster-building timeline. He's also well-known for his route-running ability, something the Packers lack and that is really important to build Jordan Love's trust. He's under contract for 2024 with his fifth-year option.

RB Zack Moss, Indianapolis Colts

Age: 25
Cap hit: $632k in 2023

The Packers have had problems running the football, and just buying a running back isn't exactly the smartest way to solve this. But AJ Dillon hasn't been great, and he will be a free agent next offseason. Aaron Jones is still great, but he will be 29 in December and is pretty expensive. So acquiring an inexpensive and young solid option makes sense. Moss has had 4.6 yards per carry this season with high volume — he's already had more total carries than he had in any other season in the NFL. But his touches will inevitably go down with Jonathan Taylor being closer to 100%.

Defense

S Jeremy Chinn, Carolina Panthers

Age: 25
Cap hit: $1.62 million in 2023

A quadriceps injury forced the Carolina Panthers to place Chinn on IR. However, and this is a stress point, it's not about 2023. Jeremy Chinn is 25, so the Packers could buy low, taking advantage of a Panthers losing team and that Chinn is in the last year of his rookie deal. Chinn is slated to be a free agent, but a trade would certainly involve a negotiation to secure an immediate extension. As you know, the Packers safety situation is dire, especially because the only players under contract beyond this season at the position are Anthony Johnson Jr. and Zayne Anderson.

EDGE Chase Young, Washington Commanders

Age: 24
Cap hit: $2.96 million

I'm not sure the Packers would invest in another edge defender after taking Lukas Van Ness in the first round, but Young could make sense if Green Bay also decides to trade away Preston Smith, for example. Add that Rashan Gary extension talks haven't been productive, and the deal for Young could be interesting. He's an extremely talented player, and even though injuries prevented him from being consistent, his ceiling is still high.
