The Green Bay Packers became a good young team faster than expected in 2023, Jordan Love’s first year as a starting quarterback in the NFL. But the step to become great didn’t come in 2024, leaving behind a sense of frustration.
After the season, general manager Brian Gutekunst indicated that it was time to ramp up the sense of urgency and fight for championships, so this is a pivotal offseason for the Packers to go from playoff contender to a true Super Bowl contender in the NFC.
A smaller part of that is keeping their own free agents—it’s not a shiny group, and Green Bay has already re-signed some of them. The biggest challenge is to add blue-chip players to a roster that is balanced, but lacks true stars.
But after years of financial trouble, the Packers are finally in a comfortable cap situation, entering the new league year with $42 million of projected cap space—and almost $30 million available to spend after procedural moves.
The legal tampering period kicks off on Monday, March 10, at 12 p.m. ET, and the new league year officially starts on Wednesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. ET. In this window, players are allowed to negotiate and agree to deals with teams, but official signings can’t be done before Wednesday afternoon.
