Packers’ 2025 Initial 53-man Roster: Final decisions bring both tough cuts and intriguing outcomes into the spotlight
Green Bay officially announced the roster on Tuesday.
The Green Bay Packers have finalized the construction of their initial 2025 53-man roster. After days of tough decisions for general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur, the Packers have made several cuts and placed players on injury lists to reduce the roster from 90 to 53 players.
Quarterbacks (2)
- In: Jordan Love, Malik Willis
As expected, the Packers will keep only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, Jordan Love and Malik Willis. The big question now is who among Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma will be back on the practice squad—and there’s a realistic scenario where the Packers look for a QB3 elsewhere.
Running backs (3)
- In: Josh Jacobs, Chris Brooks, Emanuel Wilson
- IR-DFR: MarShawn Lloyd
The big point here was if last year’s third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd would start the season on the active roster or on the injured reserve. At the end of the day, his hamstring injury was serious enough, and the Packers were cautious enough, to place him on IR with a designation for return. This means Lloyd can return in 2025, but he is going to miss at least four games.
Wide receivers (6)
- In: Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, Malik Heath
- PUP: Christian Watson
Mecole Hardman and Malik Heath were competing for the sixth spot, and Heath got it. Mecole Hardman got released, and the rest of the list had no surprises.
Tight ends (4)
- In: Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave, John FitzPatrick, Ben Sims
FitzPatrick was basically a lock to make the team, so the future of Ben Sims was the question mark. After all, he makes the team too, with the Packers keeping four tight ends.
Offensive line (9)
- In: Rasheed Walker, Aaron Banks, Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Jordan Morgan, Anthony Belton, Darian Kinnard, Donovan Jennings
- PUP: John Williams
- IR/DFR: Jacob Monk
- Injured reserve: Travis Glover
The addition of Darian Kinnard brough a different element to the offensive line right before final cuts. By that point, the fringe-roster players had to fight for one final spot, and it went to Donovan Jennings. However, Monk goes to IR with a designation to return and can return after four games.
Defensive tackles (6)
- In: Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Colby Wooden, Karl Brooks, Warren Brinson, Nazir Stackhouse
It was unclear if the Packers would be willing to keep six interior defensive linemen, but they pulled it off with a smart decision to maintain undrafted rookie Nazir Stackhouse. It’s a good way of protecting him from the waiver wire.
Edges (5)
- In: Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare, Barryn Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr.
- PUP: Collin Oliver
Collin Oliver hasn’t practiced yet, so he starts on PUP, missing the first four games. Barryn Sorrell is also hurt, but starts on the active roster—meaning he will play soon. Arron Mosby and Deslin Alexandre were waived.
Linebackers (4)
In: Quay Walker, Edgerrin Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper
Isaiah Simmons and Kristian Welch were fighting for the presumed final roster spot. After all, both vested veterans ended up being released, and the Packers go with only four off-ball linebackers.
Cornerbacks (6)
- In: Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, Carrington Valentine, Bo Melton, Micah Robinson, Kamal Hadden
Kalen King showed good flashes in the preseason and had several great plays against the Seahawks, but it wasn’t enough for him to make the team—the Packers want him back on the practice squad. Veteran cornerback Corey Ballentine was also released, even though Green Bay decided to keep six cornerbacks while Nate Hobbs is returning from injury.
Safeties (5)
- In: Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Javon Bullard, Zayne Anderson, Kitan Oladapo
- Out: Jaylin Simpson
- Injured reserve: Omar Brown
Omar Brown went to the season-ending injured reserve—an injury settlement might be possible since he’s expected to be healthy soon.
Special teamers (3)
- In: Brandon McManus, Daniel Whelan, Matthew Orzech
- Out: Mark McNamee
The Packers kept all three of their special teamers from last year, re-signing McManus and Whelan. Mark McNamee is part of the International Pathway Program, so the plan is to get him (or former Packer Alex Hale) back on the practice squad with a roster exemption.
