The Green Bay Packers have hired their new head of strength and conditioning. According to Matt Schneidman, from The Athletic, the team got former San Francisco 49ers assistant strength coach Aaron Hill. He replaces Chris Gizzi, who had been the Packers strength and conditioning coordinator since 2019, but was fired after last season.
That move shows another inclination from the Packers that they are willing to lean on the 49ers' philosophy. A similar approach had been taken when hiring the defensive coordinator. Before moving back to college, Jeff Hafley was the 49ers defensive backs coach for three years.
Aaron Hill worked as an assistant for five years in San Francisco, under head strength and conditioning Dustin Perry. Last year, the 49ers were successful in avoiding soft-tissue injuries, something that was concerning for Green Bay.
Résumé
Hill graduated from University of Minnesota in 2013 with a bachelor of science in kinesiology sport and exercise science. He played in the NFL for the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 training camp, but didn't make the 53-man roster.
After some time as the University of Minnesota conditioning intern, he had his first NFL opportunity as an intern for the Carolina Panthers in 2015. Then, he spent four years as an assistant at Vanderbilt before moving back to the NFL with the 49ers before the 2019 season.
Staff
Initially, the Packers fired only coordinator Chris Gizzi. That means assistants Thadeus Jackson, Mark Lovat, and Grant Thorne are still under contract — it's unclear at this point if they will be retained, or if Aaron Hill will have the chance to build his own staff.
