The Green Bay Packers have filled an important position on their defensive coaching staff. According to Tom Silverstein from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, head coach Matt LaFleur has hired Anthony Campanile as the team's new linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

Campanile replaces Kirk Olivadotti, who had been with the Packers since 2019 and was allowed to take a position with the Seattle Seahawks. The new hire will also absorb the run game coordinator job from former Packers DL coach Jerry Montgomery.

Hiring process

Anthony Campanile had been the Miami Dolphins linebackers coach since 2020. This cycle, he interviewed with the New York Giants for their defensive coordinator position — they ended up hiring former Tennessee Titans DC Shane Bowen for the job.

The Philadelphia Eagles also wanted Campanile as their linebackers coach — Vic Fangio moved from the Dolphins to the Eagles this offseason and recommended the hiring. However, Campanile chose to go to Green Bay instead.

Curiously enough, Campanile will be replaced by former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry, who was hired as the new Dolphins linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

Track record

Campanile started his coaching career at the high school level in 2006, with defensive and offensive experiences. He moved to college football for Rutgers in 2012, first as a defensive assistant, then as a tight end and wide receivers coach.

He went back to the defensive side of the ball in 2016, as Boston College's DBs coach, and later as a co-defensive coordinator. In spite of being a Boston College coach, he didn't cross paths with new Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who arrived there in 2020.

After one year as a linebackers coach at Michigan, Campanile was hired by the Dolphins under head coach Brian Flores and defensive coordinator Josh Boyer. He was retained when Mike McDaniel took over in 2022.

Packers defensive staff

After the Packers hired defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, several other decisions have been made. Pass rush specialist Jason Rebrovich will be promoted to defensive line coach, and defensive backs coach Ryan Downard will be retained.

However, inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti moved to the Seahawks, and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery has gone to the New England Patriots. Passing game coordinator Greg Williams won't be retained either.

Besides Campanile, the new coaching staff will have assistant defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase, who was with Hafley at Boston College.
