Packers make revealing move that signals stability before more changes arrive at a key position group this offseason
Sean Rhyan is now under contract through 2028.
The Green Bay Packers have solved their center issues. Or at least made sure that it won’t get worse than it was last year.
On Sunday, ahead of the legal tampering period in free agency, the Packers extended Sean Rhyan with a three-year, $33 million contract. The deal can go up to $39 million with incentives. The guarantees indicate it’s mostly a one-year deal with two team options, even though the details haven’t been reported yet.
Decision at center
The Packers certainly overpaid Rhyan based on his market projections, which would indicate a contract around $6 million to $8 million a year. The reason for that was the search for certainty, as Green Bay didn’t want to wait for free agency.
As a released player, Tyler Biadasz signed with the Los Angeles Chargers even before the market opens for $10 million per season. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills were able to extend Connor McGovern. Outside of Tyler Linderbaum, who’s expected to make more than $20 million a year, the top center on the market would be Carolina Panthers’ Cade Mays.
Future at the position
With the decision to extend Rhyan, the Packers are extremely likely set to release Elgton Jenkins, who would make $20 million under his current deal.
Most likely, the Packers will still look to add a center in the draft and compete with Rhyan, who can also move to guard, his original position in the NFL.
The Packers are going through several offensive line changes. Left tackle Rasheed Walker is also a free agent and should depart, with Green Bay expected to play former first-round pick Jordan Morgan at LT. The other projected starting offensive linemen are left guard Aaron Banks, right guard Anthony Belton, and right tackle Zach Tom.
