Packers could suffer unintended consequences from the latest big college coaching news as a ripple effect may take shape
Adam Stenavich has been the Packers offensive coordinator since 2022.
The Michigan Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, which should still have several ramifications. But one in particular will gain traction over the next few weeks, and the Green Bay Packers could be affected.
Now, Michigan will look for a new head coach, and Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich could be a name to watch. There have been some early rumors about the interest, and our own Michigan writer at A to Z Sports, A.J. Schulte, mentioned Stenavich on the list of potential options.
This is what Schulte wrote:
“A former Michigan Wolverine and two-time All-Big Ten offensive tackle, Stenavich has risen through the ranks as an NFL coach working with the offensive line under Kyle Shanahan and Matt LaFleur, and now serves as the offensive coordinator for the Packers under LaFleur. Stenavich cut his teeth playing under the legendary Lloyd Carr and has used his experience to build an impressive career in the NFL.
“While LaFleur gets the credit, Stenavich is just as impactful for their offensive game planning and play designs, and has interviewed for NFL head coaching jobs before. Stenavich has been instrumental in Green Bay’s development of Jordan Love into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and there’s a reason he’s the highest-paid non-play-calling coordinator in the league. An opportunity to return to Michigan and steady the program might be very appealing here if he doesn’t land an NFL job.
“Stenavich is very well-connected throughout the coaching world and has coached alongside plenty of intriguing names in both the college and the NFL. In college, he was part of the same San Jose State staff that featured Georgia Bulldogs defensive backs coach Donte Williams as well as Washington WRs coach Jimmie Dougherty. He was also a graduate assistant at Michigan alongside Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach Aubrey Pleasant under Brady Hoke in the early 2010s. There’s no doubt he would be able to pull in a tremendous staff.” — A.J. Schulte, A to Z Sports Michigan.
Adam Stenavich has already gotten traction in NFL circles
This past offseason, the Chicago Bears interviewed Adam Stenavich for their head coaching position before zeroing in on Ben Johnson. Stenavich also drove interest for play-calling offensive coordinator opportunities with the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks.
Stenavich started his coaching career at Michigan, first as a strength and conditioning intern, then as a graduate assistant. After working as an offensive line coach at Northern Arizona and San Jose State, he got his first NFL job on the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as an assistant OL coach.
Steno has been with the Packers since Matt LaFleur’s inaugural coaching staff in 2019 as an offensive line coach. He was promoted to run game coordinator/offensive line coach in 2021 and to offensive coordinator in 2022, replacing Nathaniel Hackett.
There has also been some criticism
Even though the Packers have had great offensive results and efficiency over the past few years, it’s not like Stenavich doesn’t receive criticism.
Under LaFleur, the offense was second in EPA/play with Hackett and has been fifth since 2022 — there are obviously different and attenuating circumstances, though, and Stenavich receives internal praise for his ability to gameplan the run game.
Potential replacement options
If the Packers lose Stenavich, LaFleur would have to open a search for his third offensive coordinator in Green Bay. The most natural internal option would be senior assistant Luke Getsy, who has already been the Packers’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
He left to be a play-calling OC for the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders, but returned to Green Bay after unsuccessful stints. Passing game coordinator Jason Vrable could also be an internal alternative.
