Safety Darnell Savage has been placed on injured reserve by the Green Bay Packers, according to ESPN's reporter Rob Demovsky.
The safety had injured his calf against the Las Vegas Raiders in week 5, but was able to play after their bye. However, he aggravated the injury during the Denver Broncos game, and now will need more time to recover.
That move means Savage will miss at least four games — the Packers are slated to face the Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Los Angeles Chargers over the next month.
The Packers have already decided the corresponding moves. According to Bill Huber, from Sports Illustraded, Green Bay has promoted cornerback Corey Ballentine from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster.
Ballentine has been with the Packers since last season. He didn't make the initial active roster, but has been elevated from the practice squad for gameday three times this season, versus the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, ans Las Vegas Raiders. Therefore, he had reached his limit of elevations in 2023.
With the open practice squad spot, the Packers will officially sign former New York Giants cornerback Zyon Gilbert.
The Packers also signed cornerback Robert Rochell to their 53-man roster off of the Carolina Panthers practice squad.
The Packers are expected to start Rudy Ford and Jonathan Owens at safety. However, rookie seventh-rounder Anthony Johnson Jr. is expected to see increased playing time on defense. Green Bay also has special teamers Dallin Leavitt and Zayne Anderson at safety on the 53-man. On the practice squad, the options are undrafted rookie Benny Sapp III and versatile defensive back Innis Gaines, who is originally a safety but has been used as a slot corner this year.
Darnell Savage is playing under his fifth-year option, which the Packers exercised last year, guaranteeing him $7.9 million. He will be a free agent next offseason.
