The Green Bay Packers have finally found an effective defensive coordinator, but it's tough to say how long it will last. On Wednesday, it became clear that Jeff Hafley's success with the Packers is catching the attention of other teams.

The New York Jets have requested to interview Hafley for their head coaching job, open since the team fired Robert Saleh early this season.

Jeff Hafley led the Packers to a jump from 27th to seventh in defensive DVOA in his first season as an NFL defensive coordinator. He also has head coaching experience, leading the Boston College program from 2020 to 2023.

A 45-year-old coach, Hafley started his career in 2001 at WPI as a running backs coach. He moved to the defensive side and worked for Albany, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers.

Hafley had his first NFL experience in 2012 as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant defensive backs coach, then was promoted to DBs coach after one season. He moved to the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers in the same role.

The coach went back to college in 2019 to be the co-defensive coordinator and DBs coach at Ohio State. After leading one of the best defenses in the NCAA, he was hired by Boston College in 2020.

The decision to move from college back to the NFL was Jeff Hafley's, who was suffering with the challenges of the new rules, like NIL and the transfer portal.

Jeff Hafley is the third defensive coordinator working under Matt LaFleur for the Packers, after Mike Pettine and Joe Barry. The results speak for themselves, and it's clear that Green Bay made the correct choice this time around.

The Packers clearly wouldn't want to lose Jeff Hafley after just one season, but his tenure has been so successful that it's hard to avoid interest from other teams.

Hafley is the second Packers coordinator to receive head coaching interest. Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich will interview for the Chicago Bears opening.
