The Green Bay Packers have designated safety Darnell Savage to return from injured reserve. He had initially injured his calf against the Las Vegas Raiders in week 5, but was available and got injured again in Denver, versus the Broncos. After missing four games, he was eligible to return.
Now, he has a 21-day window to practice — the Packers can activate him at any point of the next three weeks. It doesn’t mean he will be available to play on Thursday, but he is eligible to do so if healthy enough.
Fellow safety Rudy Ford was limited, which means he has a shot to play. The Packers were without both of their starting safeties in two of the last three games, forcing them to play with backups Jonathan Owens and Anthony Johnson Jr. Curiously, they won both games, against the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers.
Cornerback Eric Stokes is still on IR. He’s also eligible to return, but the fact that he hasn’t been designated yet indicates that he will probably miss at least one more game.
Bad news on the report
The injury report was long on Monday — an estimated report, since the Packers didn’t practice. Usually, the first report is released on Wednesday, but Green Bay follows a different schedule with a game on Thursday this week. Sixteen players have been listed and limited or DNP.
The worst pieces of news were regarding offensive players. Tight end Luke Musgrave (abdomen) and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (concussion/knee) were listed as DNPs, which means they wouldn’t have practiced if there was a real activity. Wicks’ case is particularly concerning, because it’s virtually impossible to clear the protocol in three days.
Running backs Aaron Jones (knee) and Emanuel Wilson (shoulder), who left the Los Angeles Chargers game early, were also listed as DNPs. They are not expected to play on Thanksgiving, as the Packers have added two new (or not so new) running backs to the room, Patrick Taylor to the active roster and James Robinson to the practice squad.
On defense, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell left the game with a neck injury and wouldn’t have practiced.
DNPs:
De’Vondre Campbell (neck), Josiah Deguara (hip), Aaron Jones (knee), Luke Musgrave (abdomen), Dontayvion Wicks (concussion/knee), Emanuel Wilson (shoulder).
Limited:
Jaire Alexander (shoulder), Corey Ballentine (shoulder), Kenny Clark (shoulder), AJ Dillon (groin), Rudy Ford (biceps), Rashan Gary (shoulder), Elgton Jenkins (knee), Keisean Nixon (ankle), Darnell Savage (calf), Christian Watson (shoulder).
