Cornerback is at the top of the priority list for the Green Bay Packers this offseason. Publicly, general manager Brian Gutekunst might have said that he’s happy with the guys the roster has now, but it’s impossible to go to another season without adding more high-end pieces — whether it’s via free agency or the draft.

And a Super Bowl champion might be the solution. Our team at A to Z Sports made a list of top free agents at the cornerback position, and Seahawks’ Tariq Woolen was the second one on it. The Packers were mentioned as one of the top landing spots for him, alongside the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys.

Free agent profile

“Riq Woolen might be one of the most interesting free agents in the 2026 class. After bursting onto the scene during his rookie season, Woolen was demoted in 2025, starting in only seven games despite playing in 16 of them. He plays a high-risk, high-reward style of ball that works great in some systems and is a no-go for defensive coordinators in others.

“The skinny on Woolen is that you are getting an incredibly traits-dominant corner with a nose for the football. That will pique the interest of many teams. However, we know that he tends to gamble not only in coverage, but with his emotions in games.

“Due to his durability and age at only 26 years old, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a team sign him to a multi-year deal where they bet on him returning to the Pro Bowl form from his rookie season.” — Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports NFL

Fit in Green Bay

If you read what Gregson wrote, it’s easy to see why the Packers would want to sign Woolen. He’s pretty young and is entering his second NFL contract, which Gutekunst tends to prioritize as a potential long-term solution. Traits are also important for the Packers — even though this is more pronounced in the draft.

The high-risk, high-reward style is complicated, but it may work pretty well considering what the Packers have upfront — if they can generate pressure with Micah Parsons, Lukas Van Ness, Devonte Wyatt, and others, it’s positive to have players in the secondary hunting explosives.

Last season, Woolen had a 78.5 passer rating when targeted, with eight pass breakups and one interception. PFF projects that Woolen will get a three-year, $15 million contract in free agency, with $30 million in guarantees — which is not a prohibitive price by any means.
