The Packers have finally placed cornerback Jaire Alexander on injured reserve. He got injured in Week 8 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and tried to return against the Chicago Bears in Week 11, but aggravated his PCL injury.

Alexander has missed six games since, but there hadn’t been a need for the roster spot. Now, since the cornerback has most likely been ruled out for the rest of the season and with the Packers needing flexibility for the regular season finale against the Chicago Bears, they finally pulled the trigger.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Jaire Alexander would have a chance to return for the Super Bowl if the Packers get there, and this move does not prevent him from doing so. Alexander must miss at least four games on IR, and that means being out against the Bears, for the wild card round, divisional round, and NFC Championship Game. It’s still a long shot, but it’s not completely out of the equation.

Now, the Packers can execute extra roster moves ahead of the regular season finale and the playoffs to create more flexibility. And this is an imperative factor at this point of the year.
