Packers GM hints at untold context behind Rich Bisaccia’s exit that goes beyond a simple separation
Special teams coordinator resigned last week.
The Green Bay Packers didn’t want or expect special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia to leave the organization. More than Bisaccia’s decision to part ways, it certainly sounds like both sides didn’t agree on how to operate.
At the NFL Combine on Tuesday, general manager Brian Gutekunst talked to Green Bay media before his national press conference. There, he revealed that Bisaccia decided to leave to pursue other opportunities — it wasn’t just a retirement of sorts.
Disconnection
Rich Bisaccia spent four years on the Packers, and it feels like it got progressively worse. The first year was considered a success, and Bisaccia was promoted to assistant head coach — the promotion was more about the money than his role on the coaching staff.
After that, though, the Packers’ special teams had up and down seasons — and lost two playoff games in the past three years in large part because of missed field goals. Green Bay was 21st in special teams DVOA this past season.
Whether it’s a disconnection about the importance of special teams, roster-construction, or just a desire from Bisaccia to go elsewhere, it’s not clear at the moment — especially because we don’t know what opportunities there are for him. But it sure feels like both sides were not on the same page.
Right now, the Packers are in the process of hiring a new special teams coordinator, even though the timing of it isn’t ideal. Head coach Matt LaFleur has already started the interview process, including Cam Achord (Giants assistant ST coach), Tom McMahon (former Raiders STC), Kyle Wilber (Saints assistant ST coach), and Sam Sewell (Cardinals assistant ST coach).
Rich Bisaccia, 65, has been a special teams coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. In Las Vegas, he also spent a significant part of the 2021 season as the interim head coach, making the playoffs after Jon Gruden’s resignation.
