The Green Bay Packers fired defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich after an underwhelming season for the defensive front. So far, head coach Matt LaFleur has interviewed three candidates to replace Rebrovich, but one of them is already out of the equation.

And the loss is painful because it is to a divisional rival. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers run game coordinator and defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers will go to the Detroit Lions, according to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler.

The Lions had lost Terrell Williams, who went to the New England Patriots as the defensive coordinator. Dan Campbell will have a tough time replenishing the coaching staff, since he also missed offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

It's uncommon for a team to hire a position coach before hiring the coordinator, but Kacy Rodgers is an experienced and respected name in league circles.

Options

There hasn't been any type of indication of who is the Packers' first option for the job. With Rodgers out now, the two other coaches LaFleur interviewed are Aaron Whitecotton, the New York Jets defensive line coach, and Eric Washington, who spent the 2024 season as the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator but won't be retained by Ben Johnson.

Aaron Whitecotton spent the last four seasons with Robert Saleh and the Jets. He had been a lower-level assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, and San Francisco 49ers. He didn't overlap with Jeff Hafley in San Francisco, but there are obvious schematic connections.

Eric Washington is a more experienced alternative. He has been in the NFL since 2008, with experience as a DL coach for the Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers, and Buffalo Bills. He was a defensive coordinator for the Panthers and Bears, both times under a defensive-minded head coach (Ron Rivera and Matt Eberflus). After Eberflus' firing, Washington finished the season as a playcaller in Chicago.
