Quarterback Jordan Love is finally ready to play, but that doesn’t mean the Green Bay Packers won’t have a significant injury problem to face the Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field in week 4. Cornerback Jaire Alexander is officially inactive for the game because of quadricep and groin injuries.
To make things worse, backup Carrington Valentine is also inactive because of an ankle injury — it’s the second consecutive game that Valentine will miss.
Alexander was limited at practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but couldn’t practice on Friday because of his injuries.
On Saturday, the Packers elevated cornerbacks Robert Rochell and Kamal Hadden from the practice squad for gameday, a concerning indication that Jaire would not be available to face the Minnesota Vikings. The concern was officially confirmed on Sunday.
This outcome is particularly relevant because backup cornerback Carrington Valentine is inactive with an ankle injury. He was limited on Wednesday and Thursday, but didn’t play on Friday and had been listed as doubtful to play.
The Vikings have a talented receiving core with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Jalen Nailor.
Cornerback depth
Without Jaire Alexander, the Green Bay Packers are extremely thin at cornerback. Eric Stokes and Corey Ballentine are the boundary starters, with Keisean Nixon playing in the slot. The only backup options are Rochell and Hadden, elevated from the practice squad for gameday — beyond that, the Packers would have to utilize safeties at a different position if necessary.
Curiously, Green Bay decided to elevate rookie Kamal Hadden instead of Kalen King. Hadden was a sixth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs, but he didn’t make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster and was signed to the Packers’ PS on August 30. Hadden is perceived as a better boundary corner, which is the main reason why he was elevated.
Kalen King is a Packers’ seventh-round pick, but he was also waived ahead of final roster cuts and signed back to the practice squad.
Injury report
Beyond Love, Alexander, and Valentine, the only other player with an injury designation was first-round rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan, ruled out on Friday. He injured his shoulder against the Indianapolis Colts in week 2 and will miss his second consecutive game. Before the injury, he was rotating right guard snaps with Sean Rhyan.
